Hoo-rag (“the better bandana”) is essentially a tube of stretchy fabric that can be used a bunch of different ways. (Think Survivor buff.) At Chez Champion of My Heart, we’ve decided it’s a perfect way to protect Lilly’s shaved tummy. Because of her ongoing immune-suppression, Lilly neither sheds nor grows hair, so her post-ultrasound tummy is going to be bare for a long, long time.

Lilly sleeps a bit better these days — often only waking us 1-2 times a night. Tom took over most night duty because there are fewer stumbles down the hall to help Lilly and because he is MUCH better at going back to sleep than I am. I lie awake and worry … a lot. There are several reasons things might have improved overnight, including the addition of the latest CD from our friends at Through a Dog’s Ear called Music to Comfort Your Elderly Canine.

Lincoln Bark began when a pup named Sophie developed Addison’s Disease. Her family needed healthy snacks to increase her food intake in hopes of boosting her energy. That’s how special puppy treats they call Sweet Little Butterpup were born. Katie @ Lincoln Bark sent us a few free samples to try.

While we use cytarabine — a chemo drug with good anti-inflammatory properties for our needs — at lower doses than would be required for cancer treatment, Lilly still suffers from a dry mouth after her injections every 3 weeks. Her nose is also CRAZY dry (more from the steroids than the chemo), but not nearly as bad as in February, when she developed massive nosebleeds. Here is a recap of our solutions.

I find myself surprised how frustrating, time-consuming, and icky having a totally incontinent dog (for months on end, with no resolution in sight) can be. I wish I could only focus on Lilly’s strength and recovery, but I cannot. Here is a recap of the diaper options we’ve tried.

What started as a futon dog bed sensation in Scotland has become Tuffr Dog Beds made right here in Colorado. I met the Tuffr team at the American Animal Hospital Association veterinary conference earlier this year. These beds looked awesome for both home and professional use — veterinary hospitals, kennels, daycare, etc.

Evenings out are rare. Last Saturday, however, date night consisted of wine, tapas, and a painting class at Art on the Brix in downtown Golden, Colorado. So. Much. Fun. The results? Well … see for yourself.

Follow the Dog Home by Bob, Samantha, and Kevin Walsh, is an epic story that spans 17 dogs, 3 generations, and 70 years. It’s core message, with which I agree, is that dog lovers raise generations of dog lovers.

To celebrate the 5th Anniversary of Champion of My Heart, we’re doing our biggest giveaway to date — a high-end air purifier from Oreck (retail value around $400).

Still neurologically compromised, Lilly stumbles, slides, and falls a fair bit on our tile floors. We don’t really have rugs to put down all over, so we offer our humble thanks to RC Pet Products in Vancouver, British Columbia, for sending us PAWks (rubber-bottomed booty socks for dogs) for Lilly to use for improved footing in the house.
Since we weren’t sure on sizes, they sent both medium (red) and small ones (pink). We’ve tried both, and the smaller ones fall off less as Lilly pokes around the house.

Check it out. More photos and video below.

Rather than write a single comprehensive dog product review of the ThunderShirt, I’m going to write a series of reports over time so that, together, we can work through the ups and downs for our fearful canine heroine.
After last Friday’s post, where I first raised the question of ThunderShirt expectations and results, a helpful discussion got underway both in the blog comments section and on our Champion of My Heart Facebook Fan Page. Huge thanks to everyone who weighed in with how the ThunderShirt did (or did not) help their dog.
I alluded to the fact that our real-world test of the ThunderShirt wasn’t going as well as I had hoped. Here are some additional, early, details.
