I read through the 2 studies my contacts at Brave Paws provided. One is a safety study. The other is an effectiveness (efficacy) study into this new dog anxiety treatment option. Links to full text below:
The Safety Study Basics
The safety research got done as a single-site clinical lab study, where 16 healthy male beagles received the "defined mixture of Souroubea spp. vine and Plantanus spp. bark" or a placebo for 28 days. The dogs weighed between 7.6 and 13.8 kg (16.8 - 30.4 pounds). They were as young as 7 months up to nearly 5 years old.
Researchers divided the dogs into 4 groups with once daily administration as follows:
- Placebo
- 0.5X dose
- 2.5x dose
- 5x dose
The Safety Study Results
The study abstract says, "... there were no clinically significant adverse effects following treatment, as determined by clinical observations, physical examinations, body weight, hematology, clinical biochemistry, and urinalysis."
Keep in mind this includes dogs in the group that received 5x the anticipated therapeutic dose of the new dog anxiety supplement. Even with a simulated overdose, researchers found no adverse effects after 28 days of daily dosing.

The Effectiveness Study Basics
Since noise aversion is a great cause of stress and also a temporary situation that's more easily simulated, the effectiveness researchers looked at this single "suitable application" for testing this new dog anxiety supplement as a possible treatment.
The blinded, placebo-controlled study included 60 beagles of mixed ages and temperaments assigned to 1 of 6 groups:
- Placebo
- 0.5 dose

The Effectiveness Study Setup
After placebo, dog anxiety supplement, or dog anxiety medication daily dosing for 5 days (4 days prior + the day of the study), the researchers used an established thunderstorm model with dogs' behavior assessed:
- 3 minutes before thunder noises played
- 3 minutes during thunder noises played
- 3 minutes after thunder noises played
Researchers monitored dogs' activity and behavior (such as freezing in fear). They also looked at the dogs' cortisol levels in their bloodwork (one measure of stress) before and after exposure to the thunder noises.
The Effectiveness Study Results
EXCERPT: "The results showed that orally administered Souroubea-Platanus tablets reduced both behavioral and biochemical outcome measures which assessed the effect of the sound of thunder on anxiety and stress in dogs. This study compared the effectiveness of Souroubea-Platanus tablets at four dose levels with that of diazepam and a placebo control. The botanical treatment was significantly effective in all measures at the intended 1× dose, reducing inactivity and increasing activity measures in all dogs and cortisol in the responding dogs, compared with placebo-treated dogs. The botanical treatment showed a significant dose–response effect on inactivity measures and an obvious dose-dependent trend in cortisol results in responding dogs."
