Book Review The Insomniacs
Thanks to a long-ago subscription to an online group for professional, indie writers I amassed quite a few connections, including some incredibly successful people. That’s how I kind of *know Allison Winn and get the chance to follow along with her new ventures — including her prior novels with movie and series rights bought by big-name Hollywood folks. Her latest novel, The Insomniacs, is a murder mystery that Parade magazine’s reviewer thinks should be the next season of Only Murders in the Building and should have a sequel pronto. Not that she needs my help to promote her newest novel, but I think you will enjoy it too. I highly recommend you read The Insomniacs and all of her other books, especially if you need a boost of spirit. And, yes, she’s a lover of dogs, especially rescued labs and lab mixes.

The Insomniacs by Allison Winn is another entertaining, engrossing, take-the-day-off-to-read novel that offers emotional satisfaction in a world sorely lacking in justice and equality.
The Insomniacs Premise
Basically, several people who cannot sleep connect online. At first, they commiserate about lack of sleep. They race to play word games or do other types of puzzles. That’s that — until one of them suggests they meet at a local diner, where they end up befriending the overnight server.
Things go pretty crazy from there.
These people, who seem to have zero in common other than not being able to sleep, end up unraveling all sorts of past and current traumas and entanglements.
Oh, suffice it to say everyone carries secrets. Some bigger than others.
Yes, There’s a Little Romance
Indeed, a couple of the characters find a little spark that makes both of their lives more complicated. It also results in someone getting punched at Thanksgiving dinner. So, there’s that.
Cross-Country Adventure
As the characters start unraveling overlapping secrets (and need for revenge), several of them end up in a cross-country, the-clock-is-ticking adventure. It’s wild (and kind of stressful) in a good way.
Don’t Want to Spoil It
As I said in my Away to Me book review, it’s hard to review a murder mystery without giving away too much, so I hope I’ve said just enough to encourage you to read the book. It’s well worth your time and energy, and it provides a much-needed respite from reality.
In typical fashion for Winn, the book is also funny, which helps break the tension of the mystery.
