Thanks to everyone for their guesses about what on earth last week’s Wordless Wednesday photo was. Here, at long last, is the answer.
This, kids, is a well-shorn and masticated …

Mango pit.
Ginko … the famous fruit thief of peaches, bananas, pineapples, cucumbers and others … apparently nabbed a nicely ripe mango off the kitchen counter while we were fixing dinner for our neighbor’s Golden Retrievers.
Evidence upon our return shows he enjoyed his fruit snack on a dog bed in the living room, but the ONLY reason I knew what had happened is that Lilly trotted into my office, laid down, and began chewing away on the mango pit.
She looked exactly as if I’d given her some lovely prize. I thought, “What the heck?” And, found this slimy thing in her paws + mouth.
My silly, silly pups. They love some fruit.
I recently put my mango scraps including pit outside for the birds. This morning I found a very weird looking chew toy in my living room- upon further inspection and finding a seed looking thing inside- I concluded it was a mango pit that one of my dogs must have chewed up!
Was worried it might be toxic- but they seem fine- and looks like they’re not the only ones who like mango treats.
Funny, Hayley. Yes … we have lots of fruit disappear around here, including mangoes.
this made me laugh. my fruit obsessed sibe found a mango pit at THE DOG PARK this morning, and I have spent the day trying to figure out what washington state tree could possibly produce such a large seed. it wasn’t until a friend informed me it was a mango this evening that the mystery was finally solved. LOL (I hate mangoes, so had no idea!) your blog post & photo popped up on google as I was searching photos of “mango pit”! 🙂
That is too funny, Margaret. I’m glad we could help.
My dogs love fruit but don’t think I would’ve guessed this one correct although now I know what it is it does seem obvious. It looked like something furry as in stuffed animal toy but it was too perfectly round!
Oh my! I would have never guessed–until you mentioned that it was a pit. Now I can totally see that it’s a fruit pit of some kind, with dog/bed hair attached! So glad you were able to capture it–and keep us wondering. I thought about it for a long time, too!
Are mango pits dangerous like peach and apricot? I always worry about pits and pets.
Good to know! That is a sad looking mango pit.
Elka likes fruit as well (apple, banana, blueberries, etc) but she hasn’t had mango just yet!
