FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

August 31, 2010

I must have jinxed myself by declining the new dog tag and nagging about how important I think collars/tags are because last Wednesday, Lilly’s went missing. Seriously. Vanished. No idea where it went.

Clearly, she had it on when we walked in the morning, but just after lunch, she boasted an entirely naked neck.

I’d been inside working. Lilly had been outside poking around by herself and goading Tom into throwing the stick, while he worked in the garage.

I’ve walked the fence line looking for spots she might have gotten hung up. I’ve checked around the deck and the shed, thinking maybe she had shirked it while starting at bunnies. I’ve even walked the pastures, hoping for a glimpse of something shiny.

Nothing.

So, I guess I’m VERY lucky that, as The Thundering Herd warned in comments that day recently when we talked about collars, Lilly didn’t get so hung up that she choked herself.

Our ONLY guess is that she might have lost it in a mud-sucking hole because Tom did see her come up from the creek bed, literally covered in mud from her chest forward — both legs, entire head, etc.

Alas, the grasses are tall. The mud is real, and the snakes are OUT, so I’m not too keen on slogging the length of the creek, looking for new holes (from hunting mice).

It sounds silly, I know, but I loved that collar. Loved it. Loved it.

The story goes that her foster family bought it for her. I liked it, so I’ve kept it all these years. In fact, I hoped it would be Lilly’s one and only collar in her whole life.

Weird? Maybe.

But, I try NOT to just buy her things for the sake of buying her things. I recommitted to this frugal idea even more after blowing a huge amount on a fancy collar and leash for her first (and so far only) on-camera media interview in May 2008 (which went exactly nowhere … thanks for asking).

For the life of me, I cannot find the post where I wrote about the fancy, fancy dog collar and leash. So, this photo will have to do. Yes, it’s pink leather, and there is a matching leash. I’d already had a simple tag with her name and phone number made for it, but it’s sat in a drawer for 2+ years.

Lilly's fancycollar

The collar is pretty. I’d actually planned on giving it away, but now we need it for a backup until:

  • We find her old collar.
  • I find another collar I like.

This one is OK, but Lilly is NOT a sissified city girl. She is a rough-and-tumble mountain girl. And, her old collar said all that and more.

For some odd reason that collar meant a lot to me, so I’m just crushed that it disappeared.

KB’s dog K (another hearty mountain girl) used to have one just like it (different colors), so I suppose I could buy another one, but it wouldn’t be the same.

So, if there is a patron saint of missing collars, I could use some help.

P.S. And, yes, we tried asking Lilly where she lost it and to “use her nose” to find it, with no luck.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. You brought up a good issue as far as collars and safety. I see both sides of the arguments for and against. Except for one dog, who has some aggression issues, they all go collarless. Of course, I have bulldogs and they move slowly enough that I can catch them and they are not door-dashers. I had an incident that has made me aware of the dangers with an older bulldog who somehow managed to get a hind nail caught over her collar. Though she probably would have gotten free from the snag she did struggle for a moment before I got there. It was the panicked look on her face that haunts me.

  2. Yikes, mud-sucking holes. Maybe it will mysteriously turn up. Until then, I hope you find something suitable. The pink collar is pretty but doesn’t sound just right for a country girl like you describe.

  3. Also glad Lilly didn’t get hung up on something but so strange that her collar just vanished. Hope it turns up soon so you don’t have to buy a new one!

  4. That IS weird. I bet you’ll find it in 3 or 4 months in the most unexpected of places. That’s usually how it is with that kind of stuff.

As for getting hung up/choked by collars, I believe it’s a situation of calculated risk.. Marge always wears an ID collar for a couple of reasons.. mostly, her fears. She is loose in the house when we are not home and if she somehow got out, I’d feel better knowing that she was wearing a collar. Also handy to grab on to in the event of being spooked or getting snarky.

  5. Roxanne — I know how you feel. After we adopted Stitch, I bought him a very lovely Wiggles Wags & Whiskers collar — lovely black/gold embrodery on black, with velvet lining (I spent more on that collar than I’ve spent on myself). It was stunning on him. I would use that collar when we went to rescue meet & greets. After one such M&G, I forgot to take it off and put on his every day collar (which is still a nice collar, but not as regal). After romping in the backyard the next day with his golden sister Keily, he came in naked. Two days later, I found it under a remote bush — it was muddy, slimey and the lovely embroidery had been unravelled by what I’m assuming was Keily’s teeth, as there were puncture wounds on the collar as well. My husband later told me that he saw her proudly prancing around with it in her mouth. I figure she was trying to tell me that if she didn’t have a fancy collar, he wasn’t going to have one either. So, we no longer spend lots of money on collars — and have not had any missing collars. Although I am tempted when at trade shows and in foo foo doggie boutiques.

  6. oh gosh…so glad Lily didn’t get hung up, even if she did lose her collar.

Mom has a collar addiction and can’t get enough. Some of her favorite places to get collars are Rescuemetugz (some of the proceeds go to Great Dane Rescue), Collarmehappy, and Trendyhound on Etsy. Maybe you can find one one there that fits the image in your mind.

  7. I bet that you’ll find it at some odd time, like next spring. Sorry that you lost it. I get attached to things like that also. K had the same leash for her entire life until it broke recently. I’m going to try to get it fixed… but I was sad.

But, your story does demonstrate that it’s always good to have an extra collar and tags around! I have one for each of my dogs just in case…

BTW, I don’t know which of K’s collars you’re referring to but when I last bought her a collar, they’d stopped making any like her previous one. I was sad…
