FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

October 2, 2007

I got another photo of Dash and Keen’s pups. Here, they are 6 weeks old. All 7 are doing well.

About the Author Roxanne Hawn

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. Well, anyone who gets one is lucky. It seems like they are all great dogs and that Joy has done a fabulous job with them.

I’m experimenting with the look (not stare) thing with our neighbor’s new mules. Lilly doesn’t seem that interested in them yet, so it’s a nice way to practice watching, but not doing that laser-lock thing with her eyes.

I hope to teach her to watch and relax without being on total alert to where any flinch causes her to move or react.

    We’ll see.

  2. I think Joy said a few were staying in CO, I’m not sure exactly how many.

Yeah, you don’t want her staring at the other dogs but looking at them briefly or watching them is something else. I still consider a stare (as opposed to a look) to be ‘reacting’ and don’t allow/reward that.

  3. I’m so jealous. I’ve not seen them in person, and I’m running out of time. Do you know how many are staying here in CO and how many are going elsewhere?

P.S. To those outside our area, Biscuit Eaters is the training field many of us use.

I probably will get or borrow the book. We’re already doing some of that look, but don’t react, work with Lilly. My timing isn’t perfect though, and she can go from fine to NOT very quickly. Plus, she doesn’t like other dogs looking at her, so I don’t like to let her look to much at them either.

  4. Joy had the pack of them out at Biscuit Eaters a couple of times last week. They’re SO cute, I’m sure I contracted several types of diabetes in the span of 10 minutes.

And yeah, I’ll also put in a vote for the ‘Control Unleashed’ book. Lots of good stuff in there. In particular she click/treats the dogs for looking at things that worry them. I’ve been playing this game with Strummer out at Biscuit Eaters because he loses his mind when other dogs are running agility. I click/treat him for a quick glance at the action (with no lunging/reacting allowed of course) then he swings his head back around to look at me and get his treat. This might be helpful for Lilly since she seems to want to look at what worries her. Being able to calmly look at her stressors might ease her mind a bit.
