FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

October 29, 2007

Lilly awoke this morning with an oval bald spot on one of her rear legs. I’m 99.9% sure it was not there yesterday. A quick check online, and my best guess is ringworm. Tom’s going to break out the black light when he gets home so we can see if it glows, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it is. Crap!

I know that we can catch it. I know that Ginko can catch it, and I suspect that Lilly picked it up at Petco on Saturday while we were shopping for a mat to use with our go-to-place/relaxation training.

Tom thinks he can get some over-the-counter ointment for ringworm. So, maybe I won’t have to call the veterinarian. After what I spent last week on Ginko’s thyroid blood work, my budget could use a break.

So, if you’ve faced this with your dogs and have any suggestions, please let me know … pronto.

For example, I know that I should wash all the dog bedding and blankets, but because of our septic system (no city sewers here), I can’t use bleach. Will just regular washing it work OK?

Also, should I keep her confined so that she’s not dropping fungal spores all over the house? That’s what it is, right? Like a fungus?

Poor sweetie!

Our Dalmatian, who died in June 2004, was the queen of hot spots, but I haven’t had to deal with bald spots since then. I’m about to break out one of our old tricks, cutting off the ribbed part of an old sock and putting it over the leg so that Lilly will quit messing with it (licking).

I know it’s the power of suggestion, but I totally itch now. Eeew!

  1. Well, we used the black light and the bald spot did NOT glow, so we don’t think it’s ringworm. I’m going to keep it clean and watch it. Maybe she just scraped her leg on something. I watched her try to vault over a naked rose bush the other day and miss. So maybe she just has a rough-and-tumble girl kind of boo-boo.
