Way back when we were looking for a second dog, the prime concern was Ginko. His needs outranked anything. We needed a dog small enough not to re-injury Ginko’s two blown knees that we’d spent a small fortune to fix surgically. We also, however, needed a dog big enough for Ginko to play with without hurting. He’s a strong, muscular 68 pounds or so. It’s a good thing Lilly is tough as nails because last week Ginko accidently body slammed her.
They were racing around in the snow, playing a game we call Rabbit Dog, where they take turns chasing each other at very high speed. Full on, full out, sprinting from one end of our 3 acres to the other.
After being cooped up due to weather and coyote proximity, Ginko was a wild, wild boy. He took off running, trying to entice Lilly to chase him. He made several close passes, trying to motivate her with his speed. She did chase him a little, but at one point, she stopped to box with him. You know that, forearm thumping thing dogs do?
Well, she stopped, but Ginko did not. As she threw her front arms up to bop him, he body slammed her straight back, flat on her back. She landed with an audible “Ooophm.”
Thankfully, the snow broke her fall. The landing was hard for sure, but she popped right back up and continued playing. I checked her later to make sure nothing hurt, and she seemed fine.
Lilly may indeed be the “softest” personality dog I’ve ever known. She may be shy and nutty and weird. BUT, she’s one tough mama!
