You can now rent a dog for a few hours or up to a week. It’s touted as a way to give homeless animals an option other than euthanasia and to give time-strapped people some puppy loving time. But, I have my doubts.
I can think of only a handful of dogs who might find it fun to be bounced from person to person. Others, I believe, would find it simply stressful.
I guess that during their “off” times the dogs just stay at the company kennel, which doesn’t sound like much fun to me.
If you want to read the short Time magazine piece on the new company, copy and paste this link (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1649319,00.html).
I tried to imbed the link, but that function in my software seems not to be working. Sorry.
I suspect that indeed there is a market for such a service, but people who cannot have a dog right now, for whatever reason, could get the same experience by volunteering as a dog walker at a local shelter.
I think this sounds like a crappy deal for the dogs. It reminds me of that quote attributed to M. Facklam:
“We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we
can spare.
return, they give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.”
