FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

April 26, 2011

One of the largest truly wild herds of elk in the region spend the winter and spring near us. Most times, they stay back in the many-thousand-acre open space park, but last week, a bunch of them made a visit to the hillside behind our house. They hung around pretty much all day — grazing, sleeping, and such.

As you can see, we still have no leaves on the aspen trees behind the house. Just the fuzzy seed pod things … so far. (And, yes, that’s our agility equipment blown over in the storm.)

We’ve heard, but not seen, coyote activity lately too. Since they breed in February / March, the pups likely have been born. It’s an important time to keep an eye on the dogs when they are outside because the one time Lilly tangled with a coyote was in the spring.

Typically, our local hummingbirds migrate back in April, but so far, we have not seen or heard them either. I’ve put out homemade humming bird food, so they’ll have plenty to eat when they arrive.

I did have the craziest wildlife dream the other night though. I dreamed that a BIG BROWN BEAR was sound asleep on our back deck, right outside one of the sliding glass doors. I was trying really hard to get a good picture of the snoozing bear before the dogs realized he was there. Silly!

We’ve only seen one bear near the house in all these years, but I missed getting a picture of him.

  1. The hummers are very late this year. I did the same as you… my feeders are out and waiting for them. I hope that they didn’t run into trouble during their migration.

Don’t you love having the elk around?

  2. It was 70 on Sunday, sunny and glorious. Today, wind is coming from Canada and it’s darn frigid! We’re supposed to get snow. Good grief!

  3. I’d say judging from the photo that you are way overdue for some nice spring weather!
