FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

October 18, 2007

You know you’re one of those crazy dog moms when shopping for nice clothes seems weird. OK, part of that also comes from working at home. Unless I have a meeting with a client or a face-to-face interview, I never get out of sweats or jeans. But, I found this cute coat at Old Navy last Saturday. I imagined how darling it would look when we’re training outside, but then I wondered — Is Lilly going to get it dirty?

So, now, I’m afraid to wear it if I’m going somewhere with her.

I’ve mentioned it before, but Lilly is kind of a grubby little stinker (no sissified city dogs here), and many of her confidence-building tricks involve touching me with her feet in some way. When she begs, I give her a knee to balance on. When she stretches, she does so against my chest.

Often, I feel a good bit grubby myself. Thanks, Lil.

She doesn’t shed a ton, but I do have dog hair on me most of the time. One of our early agility trainers told me not to worry about it. She said dog people don’t even notice the dirt or hair.

But, the problem is that Lilly and I aren’t always around true dog people, which means there probably are a good number of regular folk who think I’m a rumpled, crazy dog lady.

Sometimes I forget to take off the bait bag or the clicker attached to my wrist. And, I’m pretty sure the average person has no idea what they are for. In those situations, I probably look like a foreign tourist.

Maybe I care.

Most of the time, I don’t.

As part of my shopping excursion, I also tried on a spectacular wool and cashmere dress coat. It was blue, knee length, and double breasted. It fit really, really well. I was (and still am) very tempted by this pretty coat (even though I have virtually nowhere to wear it). But, it cost like $500.

I kid you not … here’s what I thought … I could pay for a lot of classes with that money.

Lilly wins. My wardrobe (what there is of it) loses. And, I’m OK with that.

  1. Thanks, Lisa. Maybe we’re not so crazy after all. I’m still longing for the beautiful dress coat. But, I do like the little jacket I got at Old Navy. I wore it when Lilly and I went on an adventure on Saturday. When she got excited and jumped toward me, I said, “Don’t get mommy dirty!”

Despite the recent rain/snow, I think I managed to make it home without stains. Unless, of course, there’s a huge paw print on my back or something. ;o)

    Thanks for visiting.
