Summer reading recommendation! A Violet Season by Kathy Leonard Czepiel is a fantastic read. Set in the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York in the late 1800s, A Violet Season chronicles one growing season on a family-owned violet farm. Brothers embroiled in a long-standing feud change the course of (at least) one woman’s life forever.
A story of mothers and daughters, husbands and sons, A Violet Season delivers the perfect mix of historical detail, carefully crafted characters, and rich narrative. Heart-pounding at times, heartbreaking at others, A Violet Season’s imagery and undercurrent of societal unrest does justice to an earlier time and sheds light on the challenges we face today.
Taking a break from Lilly news to share info on this neat new cookbook from my colleague and friend Brette Sember. First, came The Parchment Paper Cookbook and now … The Muffin Tin Cookbook, which, I believe, provides recipes for many occasions. And, if you think it’s all or only about muffins, THINK AGAIN!
File this under Entirely Off Topic, Foodie Tangent Edition. Congratulations to my friend and colleague Brette Sember on the publication of The Parchment Paper Cookbook. It features 180 fast, healthy recipes perfect for busy moms, solo or duo cooks, people with small kitchens, new cooks, or anyone who hates to do dishes — no pots or pans required. Seriously. [We have a copy to give away.]
Lilly is fairly famous for her expensive veterinary dramas. Actually, all of my dogs proved rather expensive at one point or another. That’s one reason (among many) two dogs is my limit. Two dogs is what I can afford.
So, I was intrigued and then amused when the social media team from Time Inc. Lifestyle Group, which partners with VPI Pet Insurance, contacted me about VPI’s new pet cost calculator. Essentially, you put in some information about your pet, breed, where you live, etc. and it generates a list of costs associated with the most likely veterinary expenses you’ll face.
Happy Tails Books honored me and Lilly with an invitation to be included in a new book called 15 Great Pet Blogs … and their most memorable posts. Through the end of June, Champion of My Heart readers can use a special discount code for $2 off the book’s purchase.
15 Great Pet Blogs is 128 pages and sells for $12.95. Like all of the books published by Happy Tails, at least 25% of net profits from 15 Great Pet Blogs will be donated back to the rescue of the buyer’s choice.

We only have TWO weeks left to reach our goal to raise $2,500 for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. So, we’ve added some donation incentives, with many thanks to Kevin Myers from Dog Lover’s Digest, who has written TWO terrific posts in support of our Never Shock a Puppy campaign:
Big congrats and thanks for playing along to Laura, Lance, and Vito from The Dogs are Really in Charge. They won our Marcus of Umbria giveaway. On their blog, they tell all sorts of stories about their mixed family that includes a corgi (that’s Lance), a toller pup (that’s Vito), FIVE ferrets and a cat named Like. Oh, and did we mention that there’s now a service puppy in training in da house? That’d be Chuck (a chocolate lab, who is just too cute).
Congratulations to Murphy’s mom from over at Murphy’s Law (a blog about a young Great Dane). She won my review copy of Canine Colors, that new dog matching system I blogged about last week. It’s an especially happy thing because this header photo is enough to improve even the WORST Monday.
