FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

September 21, 2009

It’s a scattered day here at Chez Champion of My Heart — what with family medical dramas, the first snow, and household prep for new carpet scheduled to be installed tomorrow. So, you’ll have to pardon this mishmash of news for its lack of theme.

First Snow
FIRST, it’s true. September 21 is the first snow of the season. We awoke to a driving sleet. Tom had just said, “A couple more degrees, and we’ll have snow.” And, he was right. We might get a couple of inches by lunch, if this keeps up.

Big-Big Brag on Tom

I am thrilled to report Tom’s FIRST PLACE win in the custom motorcycle category at yesterday’s Colorado English Motoring Conclave (aka British car/motorcycle show).

One of the event organizers came up behind me while I was taking this shot. He did not know who I was, but he said, “You like that one?” When I agreed, he added, “It got a LOT of votes.” From the inflection, it sounded to me like it wasn’t just a WIN, but a BIG WIN.

Tom raced to get this bike done in time for this annual show. It’s so nice to see his hard work earn rewards.

Big Dog I Met

After much consideration, I decided to leave Lilly home Sunday, even though it would have been a good opportunity for her to work/train at the conclave. I’m glad I did. It was HOT most of the day. There were MANY dogs, and a bagpipe and drum band wandering around that likely would have scared the crap out of her. Plus, it freed me up to fuss on Tom on what turned out to be such a big day. I would not have been able to stay all day, if Lilly had come.

While we enjoyed our picnic lunch in the shade, this HUGE dog came by with his dad. They were so gracious about letting Tom take a photo of this Irish Wolfhound. I suspect it happens a lot. His name is Telly, and I believe he is the biggest dog I’ve ever seen in person.

He had a super temperament too. As you can see, his leash was just resting on his back. The man did not even hold on it it. Telly just stayed with him as he browsed the cars and motorcycles in the park. He didn’t approach anyone who didn’t show interest. He didn’t give any of the other dogs any notice whatsoever. He had such a calm, confident air about him. What a doll!

For scale, remember I’m barely over 5 feet tall.

  1. I’m having a hard time grasping the snow thing. Not ready yet. Congrats to Tom on the big win. I’ve never seen a wolfhound in person. They are certainly impressive.

  2. I LOVE the pict of you with the wolfhound. It’s amazing.

And, congrats to Tom – very cool.

Finally, can you believe the snow? I say that every single year because it always seems too early. Once I get used to it, I even kind of like it but the first one is a shocker.

  3. One more thought … do you think they could splice the wolfhound temperament gene into a border collie? Even a touch of that confidence and ease would be a welcome addition. (giggling)

  4. OMD! Snow, already!!! That’s insane!!! Please, please, I am not ready for winter yet. Congrats on the big win 🙂 Woofs, Johann

  5. Congrats to Tom, how exciting!

Funny to think I was in shorts riding my bike yesterday in the mountains and now the riding season may be more or less over up there.

  6. Thanks. I’ll pass along the kudos. Those wolfhounds do seem like such neat dogs. Too big for my blood though.

Well, Dog Geek, your 5yo comparison is nicer than my hubby who said, “If you had furry feet, you’d look like a Hobbit.”

  7. Wow! Huge congrats to Tom on the big win – that’s awesome! Love the pic with the Irish Wolfhound. I agree with Sharon – every wolfhound I’ve met has had a wonderfully mellow temperament. He looks impossibly big in that photo – it makes you look like a 5 year old!

  8. I love wolfhounds. Every one I’ve met is a doll. The first time Murray saw one he had the same reaction most dogs have when they see him: what the heck is that thing? And they aren’t THAT much bigger than him!
