If you missed the news from late last week, the lump our veterinarian surgically removed from Lilly’s neck was BENIGN … and kind of a weird one, called a canine adnexal nevus (or fiboradnexal hamartoma). Not scary, just strange.
Maybe letting Lilly sleep in “the big bed” with us Tuesday night telegraphed that something was up. Maybe my ability to keep my worries to myself failed … because Lilly shook so hard with fear that the dog scale at the veterinary hospital sounded like an 18-wheeler going over a cattle grate.

Over the Independence Day Weekend, Lilly and I squeezed in some girl time for a hike. No trouble with mountain bikes on the hike-only day, but we did come face-to-face with two off-leash dogs. Not great, but it could have been worse.

Saturday, Lilly and I hosted a special guest for a dog-friendly restaurant patio lunch and hike. This gave Lilly the chance to practice her many social graces. She did terrific in many “scary” situations, but Lilly did lollygag like you would not believe. It kind of freaked me out.
Last summer, Lilly’s entire flat-buckle collar, tags and all, went missing … right off her neck. The dogs wear collars 24/7, so when Lilly came up from the creek bed muddy from nose to armpits with a naked neck, that’s something a girl like me notices.
I met Lisa Marshall from Estes Park, Colorado, during my big trip to New York City last month. Funny that we had to go across the country to meet. Anyway, she faces a challenge of being a dog-lover and a home chicken-raiser. She needs our help.
