If you watch the Discovery Channel shows of underwater life, you’ve likely seen images of jellyfish puffing their way along in the water — expanding and contracting with a simple grace. Well, I think Lilly must dream of such things because I watched her the other night as she slept on the loveseat next to me, and her foot (all things) amazed me.
Clearly, she slept. Her breathing had that rhythm to it. Her eyes moved back and forth under her tiny lids. But, her right front foot caught my attention.
With a higher sock than the others, her right foot shone white with pink pads against the dark that is Border Collie Black. Out and in. Out and in. Out and in. Her toes moved. But, it wasn’t that twitch, or flapping feet, we so often associate with a dreaming dog. There was a flow, a connection, a continuity to the movement.
It’s as if, for those few minutes, Lilly (or at least her right foot) turned into a silent, graceful jellyfish … right there on my sofa.
