August 19, 2010

Voting for the DogTime Best Dog Blog Award ends tomorrow, Friday, Aug 20, so if you haven’t voted for us (using every email address you have), could you make time to do that today? Please? For extra credit, ask everyone you know to do the same. We’d be forever grateful.

Vote here!

Champion of My Heart —> Best Dog Blog

It’s been an interesting time since the nomination went public. Suffice it to say our email in box is much busier with questions, offers, etc.

We’re doing our best to wade through it all, along with prepping for our Never Shock a Puppy campaign.

Ross Weinstein from PawScoop asked us to do a Q&A earlier this week. The blog interview went live yesterday. Even longtime readers might learn something new about Lilly or about the way I think about the dog world.

If not, then don’t miss my warnings/advice for new bloggers from the perspective of a crusty old journalist girl.

About the Author Roxanne Hawn

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. You got our vote! I enjoyed reading your interview on PawScoop. I hope you know your blog has helped me and Kona! You’re one of the first resources I found while frantically searching the internet once I figured out that Kona wasn’t “just a shy dog”. You’ve given me great ideas and your stories with Lilly have been a source of encouragement.

PS–I do think I’m going to try BAT with Kona. I’ve been reading and watching videos online and it makes a lot of sense now. It took me awhile to get my brain around how it could work for Kona (who flees/panics, doesn’t lunge/bark) but I think I see how it could work.

    1. Thanks so much, AC, for the vote and kind words. Thanks (too) for your donation to our Never Shock a Puppy campaign. It means a lot to me to support from our “home” blog friends.

  2. We voted again. Our fingers are crossed for a big win for the ChOMH team.

Thanks for your comment about obedience – I wish I could give the turns different names (it’s helped in Rally and she has fantastic turns now!) but the problem is that no speaking is allowed while you’re heeling. So, the best way to train the dog to “keep up” around turns is to physically cue the turn before it happens, usually by moving your upper body and looking in the direction of the turn.

It is going to be a lot of fun if I continue with this, though, since you and I have spoken a bit via comments about the serious (and sad) focus on negative training methods in the competition world. Just today I heard that someone wants to resort to an Electronic Collar, just for the sake of competing. Ugh.

    1. Thanks so much, Sam. That’s right … I’d forgotten that you cannot really say anything in the formal obedience ring. Bummer.

It makes me sad to think a dog would get a shock collar slapped on for something like competitive work.
