Since I’m not quite back in my chair due to the holidays and ongoing eldercare efforts, I’m posting just a quick note today. My most recent piece for Bankrate.com, that I call the Economics of Puppies, explains why puppies from various sources cost what they do and what exactly you get for your dollar. The official headline is The Price of Puppies for Sale.
It looks like it has already been posted to the Yahoo Finance site and mentioned on a Basenji breeder forum.
See what you think.
I thought you did a great job with this piece. I was particularly interested to read about the economics of rescue dogs, as that’s how I prefer to acquire all of mine. So many good but unwanted dogs that need homes.
Good piece, Roxanne. It does make me wince when these publications have qualms about calling irresponsible breeders by what they really are – puppy millers and backyard breeders.
You do a great job of getting around their queasiness though by giving good examples of what people get when they choose to buy from pet stores and “amateur” breeders.
Great piece!
