Our big dog, Ginko, loves Tom’s mom. L-O-V-E-S her. If we tell him she’s coming to visit, he’ll sit by the front door and wait. When she arrives, he mills around with excitement. As soon as she sits down, he tries to kiss her. Not in a crazy way, but a sweet, deliberate smooch. At bedtime, we let her get settled, when we ask Ginko if he wants to “snuggle with Grandma,” and he blasts upstairs to join her in bed. He’s very careful and very gentle. So, when Grandma comes, Lilly sleeps with us.
Except around 4 am last Sunday morning, I heard a thud.
Lilly had somehow fallen out of bed. We tried to coax her back, but she wandered down the hall, which made Ginko bark, which made Lilly bark, which woke up the whole house.
They bring a whole new meaning to B&B.
Befor the thump, however, Lilly’s snuggle-buddy was Tom … not me. There are a few occassions when Lilly prefers Daddy to Mommy, and one of them is in bed. I don’t know if she likes how he smells or that he’s so warm, but she’ll cuddle with him for long spans.
If I’m her only choice, then she may or may not cuddle. Usually, she takes up a spot right on Tom’s pillows.
Sometimes I try to snuggle with her, when she’s already snoozly, but she’ll often wiggle away for more space.
If I’m being honest, I’ll share that it kind of hurts my feelings. We have such a bond. We work so hard together on training and other things, and yet … Well, and yet …
There are some benefits to NOT being in close proximity to Lilly in bed. We don’t allow them in bed all that often, so it’s a real treat for them. Lilly sometimes forgets where she is when she wakes up, but when she remembers, then she’ll go on a kissing bender.
And, there’s nothing like Lilly’s tongue half-way up your nose to break a sound slumber.
