Old Dog Maintenance – Ginko’s Turn

In about a month, Ginko will be 12. He recently had a thorough exam, senior blood work, and vaccinations (3-year rabies, 1-year lepto). And, this week … he went in to have his teeth “done.” While he was conked out, they went ahead and took off two bothersome lumps — one on an eyelid and one his head.

Ginko did great, but he still isn’t feeling entirely like himself … yet.

Ginko has good teeth, and he has only had his teeth “done” once before when he was about 5-6 years old. BUT, they were getting kind of scrungy, and it has been a while since he enthusiastically chewed on a bone or anything.

So, while he is still healthy and strong, I wanted to get his teeth cleaned … essentially one last time.

Tom drove Ginko to the veterinary hospital Monday morning and worked all day around his mom’s house (nearby) until Ginko could come home.

Our big boy will go back next Monday to have his incisions checked. Then, he’ll go back the Monday after that to get his stitches out.

I’ve never had to put ointment into a dog’s eye before. It isn’t easy. Tom is better at it than I am, so he’ll probably handle that task. We have to goop some ointment into Ginko’s eye 3 times a day.

With 2 incisions and a thorough dental cleaning, Ginko isn’t keen about his whole head right now, so I’ll have to wait a few days to look at his teeth in earnest.

Silly me. I forgot to take ‘before” pictures.

He tries to rub his eye with a front paw, so he sometimes has to wear his new BooBooLoon that I got at the veterinary conference recently.

I’ll do a formal product review at some point, but here is a picture of that.
