Rolo’s Reprieve
A while back, I wrote about the the case of a dog named Rolo. Last week, he
avoided a death sentence at his hearing. He was found guilty of running at large and being a dangerous dog, but a day later the judge did not feel that he is a clear and present danger to the
community and did not uphold the euthanasia order. So after 6 months, 2 weeks and 5 days, Rolo got out of doggie jail. There are many conditions his owner must meet in the coming weeks and years,
but it’s better than …
Lilly’s New Trick: Clean Up
Allow me, please, a brag. In just a few clicker sessions, Lilly learned a new trick we call CLEAN UP. We were inspired by this video of a ridgeback putting away his toys. Lilly got the idea in just one session, but she tossed the toys into the basket with such oomph that they bounced out, which was against the rules. She caught on fast, though, and began holding the toys down with one paw, which is just about the cutest thing. …
Video Update on Lilly’s Brain Inflammation
I don’t much remember what life with Lilly was like before she got so sick with an adverse rabies vaccine reaction called meningoencephalomyelitis in January 2012. Taking care of her fills my days. Our world has gotten quite small, but we feel joy at even the tiniest “normal” thing — such as playing fetch. Here, friends, is a little video update.
Dog Product Review: Angry Birds Dog Toys from Hartz
The Angry Birds craze reached our rural, smart-phone-lacking abode. Dog toys. We’re talking Angry Birds dog toys today. And, thanks to Hartz … we have 6 dog toys to give away for the holidays.

Happy Gotcha Day to the Best Puppy on the Planet, Clover Lee Hawn
Sunday, September 13, we’ll celebrate the first anniversary of Clover’s adoption from Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue. It took fate and many major feats to get her from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Plans for festivities this weekend remain in the planning stages, but I’ll bake canine cupcakes, probably take her on a hike, and otherwise spend the entire day marking the occasion (as if we aren’t always in constant awe of just how blessed we are to be raising this incredible puppy). Let’s begin the party with this 2-minute video slideshow commemorating our first year together.
Lilly’s Herding Lesson #1, Part 2
Our herding story continues this week with a video showing Lilly chasing and/or letting the goats go hither and yon. Yes, they ended up spread across three pens, so we asked Ben, an experienced herding dog for help.

Not sure why, but my reply came up Lad,but it is me, John Shuma.
Oh! Thanks for letting me know, John, that your other comment showed up with another name. And, thanks for your ongoing interest and support.
So glad that you are recovering in a timely fashion, with the help of your pups too. Happy Birthday to Clover,a very special dog for so many reasons.Glad to see your foster puppy is doing so well. I do think it is possible to Foster Fail and have one deliriously happy dog with a forever home finally. I wish you the best in whatever you decide, but he does seem so happy,he almost smiles.Have a great holiday weekend…..I do admit to being jealous of beautiful snowfalls!!!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Looking forward to seeing more posts. Kisses for the pups
Thanks so much, Steph. It’s slow going with my recovery, but I am making progress, and that’s what matters.
Happy Birthday, Clover! Looks like you have a real pal with the foster pup! Are you sure it’s not permanent?!? Glad to see the blog back-missed you guys!❤️
Thanks so much, Karen. I’ll write soon about the health stuff too. I’m still not 100%, but I’m making progress. We’re are pretty sure the foster boy will NOT be permanent. See my reply to Ducky’s Mom.
I’m always happy to see your posts come into my email inbox, even when I don’t have time to read them right away. Glad you’re feeling better after your many health issues!
Happy 5th Birthday to Clover!! Are you going to be a foster fail with the puppy (who is adorable by the way!)? I’m afraid I would be. If our own situation was different, Ducky would probably be a sibling to another Golden soon.
Thanks so much, Ducky’s Mom! Our goal is NOT to foster fail with this puppy. Time will tell, I guess. A lot of my friends are campaigning for us to keep him, but the shelter STRONGLY discourages it because they almost always lose the family as a foster family once they adopt a foster, and they need foster homes for dogs all the time.
Hey happy birthday Clover from the UK! We don’t follow on Facebook but would LOVE to receive the emails x
Hello from so far away! Thanks for visiting and letting us know about FB and emails.
Happy Birthday Clover!!! I’m to get your posts in my email. I follow on Facebook but rarely see your posts. Crazy weather. 🙂
Great. Thanks. Yes, that’s the problem with Facebook anymore. They deliberately BLOCK people from seeing posts as a way to force you to pay for people to see things. Much better to do as much as possible HERE, where I have more control.
Happy Birthday Clover! I love hearing about the happenings at Champion of my heart!!
Thanks so much, Karen. Have a great summer!
Always glad to see your stuff online. Happy birthday, Clover!
Thanks, Sam. Can you believe she is 5 already?
