FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

November 30, 2011

It took four years and innumerable tries before we FINALLY got a new avatar photo of me and Lilly. I cannot tell you how many attempts to replace our favorite photo from December 2007 resulted in me sobbing. I’m not the most photogenic person, and I take bad photos personally. Here, then, is our new favorite picture … along with a few outtakes … because I really did NOT want to be that girl who uses a terribly outdated photo online.

We’ll try to get a new one next year too, but if we fail, be prepared to see this one for a while … even with:

  • A few more gray hairs
  • A few more crinkles around the eyes
  • A few more pounds, making me cheekier

Since Lilly tends to clam up and look worried, when you point a camera at her, we did play some fetch first so that she would smile.

It also helped that:

  • I’d just gotten my hair cut.
  • It was overcast, which meant less squinting on my part.
  • I put on much more makeup than usual.
  • We used Tom’s Nikon CoolPix S6100, which takes better photos and has a much faster shutter speed than my Canon PowerShot A1000.

Here are a few of the outtakes.

My eternal gratitude to Tom for humoring me with photo shoots day after day, until I was happy. Nothing like a decent photo to boost a sagging girl’s mood.

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. I sympathize with being non-photogenic, but I see no evidence of that here. We think they’re all great and the two of you clearly adore each other which is what really matters! Adorable!

  2. You look as beautiful as you did in your 2007 pic. But it’s really nice to see Lilly smiling too. You made a great choice.

And I agree with the others that the last outtake is also good. I’d hold it aside if you ever need a picture larger than an avatar for a profile. Or maybe a book jacket.

  3. Great picture, and I agree with Maggie the last outtake is a great runner up. Maybe less useful as an avatar, but it is catching the moment perfectly.

  4. That is such a great picture! It looks so genuine, and you both look so happy! Although, I have to say, I adore that last outtake, too. It really shows the love!
