Sunday Snake Encounter

You will NOT believe what Lilly did Sunday. We headed out for our usual 3-mile walk, and as habit dictates, Lilly ran to the edge of our bridge to “look” at the snakes who live in the rocks. We’ve had big bull snakes living in there forever, and Lilly likes to look at them, sniff them, etc. Sure … sometimes, she gets excited and barks at them, but usually it’s an amicable-enough thing.

Well, I said LEAVE IT as I crossed the bridge. I’m not sure if I startled her … or the snake startled her, but the next thing I see is a BIG bull snake flying through the air.

Somehow, Lilly grabbed him and winged him out into the pasture. I bet he was 3 feet off the ground and flew about 10 feet into the grass.

I managed to call her off once he landed, and I hollered for Tom to come check on him, but the snake smartly sought cover in the rocks.

So, we’re hoping he is OK. Rural legend says bull snakes keep rattlesnakes away. Plus, we think it’s neat to have them in the bridge.

BUT, clearly we do NOT want Lilly making a habit of grabbing snakes … of any kind.

We’re going to work on walking at attention off-leash (or on, if necessary) for a while on our way out to see if I can reshape this obsession with the bridge snakes.
