FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

August 25, 2008

Last Friday, one of my canine nieces underwent surgery to repair a compound fracture in one of her rear legs. Daisy, a poodle-yorkie mix (apparently known as Yoodles in some circles), had a run-in with a bigger dog with whom she shares a fence line. The other dog is already “red flagged” by animal control for some aggressive act, but since it’s unclear which direction the fence breach originated, the encounter, which broke Daisy’s leg, doesn’t count as another strike against him. From my perspective, there are many lessons here.

1. People need to take dog-dog issues seriously, or someone — human, canine, or otherwise — is going to get hurt some day. It’s not *if*, it’s WHEN.

2. Shared fences need to be additionally strong to prevent breaches.

3. Fence playing is one thing. Fence fighting is another, entirely … especially when a dog with known issues is on one side.

4. Really tiny dogs require extra precautionary measures.

For privacy reasons, I won’t get into exactly why this is a tremendous financial hardship for my brother. I also won’t spell out the countless reasons the people who keep the other dog are of ZERO help … because otherwise, this will read like a daytime talk show, but suffice it to say, it’s a mess.

And, poor Daisy is the victim.

  1. Yikes–I hope little Daisy is going to be okay. I was just talking to a dear friend today about her 14 year old border collie, who is regularly menaced (and has been attacked twice) by an aggressive dog whose owner walks him off leash in the same wooded path they hike every morning. No matter how many times she’s complained to him and how many times he has promised he’ll call before he goes to make sure they aren’t out at the same time, she still runs into him and now both she and her poor old dog start each morning with terrible anxiety over what used to be a soothing, stress-relieving walk together. Bad owners–don’t get me started.
