FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

May 7, 2010

Despite temps in the 30s and a brisk wind, we indeed had our Katie and Lilly reunion and Borzoi-Palooza last Sunday. It was terrific to see our Katie Girl. They both seemed happy to see each other, but they didn’t really play at all.

It made me kind of sad, actually. (But, I had a LOT to be sad about last weekend, so it could have been a sad hangover.)

They smiled. They sniffed. They poked around. Lilly played fetch, but that was about it. They pretty much ignored each other.

I thought for sure they’d rocket around, like we’ve seen in so many videos. This is the only photo I took of both of them. And, that’ s only because I asked them to stand near each other for a second.

Katie got sick on the drive up the canyon. She also is nursing a pretty significant shoulder injury that required a cortizone shot.

So, it’s probably better that she didn’t horse around too much and risk any inflammation.

We let the girls be together for a while, just the two of them here on our land, then we left Lilly at home and went up the road to lunch with a bunch of Borzoi pals who’d gathered for the occasion. We didn’t want Lilly to feel worried and outnumbered away from home.

Thunder, who lives with Katie’s former family, enjoyed having Katie as well as Zosia and Yelena visit.

The two extra girls are littermates. See how much they look alike?

Check out this darling, darling photos of them as pups.

They came with Maggie from Borzoi Rescue, who bred them. She hopes for a new litter this summer and invited us over to do some puppy socialization. That will be super fun.

For the first time ever, I saw Katie curl her lips at another dog, which tells me she was nervous. It could have been a space issue because that’s a LOT of dog flesh in one room. Or maybe she was feeling ickier than she let on. Poor sweetie.

A couple of times, I used my body to block for her so that she wouldn’t feel the intrusion as much, and that seemed to help.

Other than that (and the shoulder problems), Katie looked great. She has put on some weight, and her new family loves her dearly. It was such a happy sight to see that pointy nose poking out of the car window when they pulled up.

Katie granted Tom and I both one of her vintage Katie hugs, where she stands on her hind legs, puts her front legs on your shoulders, and leans in.

There isn’t a day of my life I’d turn down that.

  1. That is a bummer that Katie and Lilly weren’t up for a good play. Although maybe it’s just a bummer for us humans, as it doesn’t sound like either one of them was really up for too much. I do like their smiling picture.

Katie sounds like such a sweetheart. I’m glad she has a nice family.

  2. I was waiting to hear about this. It’s a little frustrating when you try so hard to get a friend to come over and play, but the day winds up being anti-climactic! However, even sniffing and walking around with each other is a good thing for Lilly. Hope Katie feels better soon.
