I begin most days with a workout, which this time of year means I’m riding my bike on the trainer in the basement. Even as a pup Ginko thought it was funny to come play while I ride. Now, Lilly often joins him, so I get a front-row seat to a doggie version of professional wrestling.
They thump each other with forearms. They crash their teeth and roll around on the ground. They snap and jump and make all manner of acrobatic maneuvers. Our previous dogs — a dalmatian and a yellow lab — did this too. They made a noise that sounded like Nar-Nar-Nar as they played, so we call it Nar-Narring.
The other day, while Nar-Narring, Ginko used one of his ploys to thwart Lilly. He laid his head on the stuffed toy they were tugging. Pretending to sleep, with the duck as his pillow, he controlled the game by trying to end it. But, Lilly is no fool.
She laid down right behind him and waited. Eventually, Ginko had an itch or something and sat up.
Lilly crawled very, very slowly toward the toy, pausing each stride or two to see if Ginko had noticed she moved. When she got close enough, she grabbed it with just the tips of her lips, and then crawled away with it. She did her best to pretend nothing had happened.
When Ginko finally realized the toy was gone, his face was priceless — like Lilly was Houdini or something.
