If you include humane legislation in your political choices, you’ll be interested to hear that The Humane Society Legislative Fund (essentially the lobbying arm of HSUS) has endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in its history. I doubt anyone picks their presidential choice solely on this one topic, but if you’re undecided and these issues are important to you, then it’s certainly something to include in your deliberations.
Being a former shelter volunteer and the former editor of two humane issues magazines, I find the decision to endorse a candidate interesting … considering the realities, controversies, and logistics that are HSUS.
And, yet, the skeptic in me wonders … How is this different/better than any other lobbying group supporting one candidate over another?
If the oil/gas industry endorsed someone would that make me more or less likely to vote for him?
What about the NRA? Or, Planned Parenthood? Or, any of the other “special interest” groups out there?
Maybe people who lobby only seem like the used car salesmen of the legislative world, if you disagree with them.
