FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

August 17, 2012

Lilly made great gains in her recovery through about Wednesday. She hasn’t been as great since then. She seems weak, tired, wobbly, and droopy. I worry about her gums and tongue being pale. We’re not getting much sleep at night. BUT, Lilly can walk again — not well, but she can walk.

I have zero time and energy to produce a real video, but we did post a short video clip of Lilly walking on our Champion of My Heart Facebook Fan Page the other night.

So that’s something, but since then, her walking and standing position has gotten droopier — especially when she is tired.

Lilly often stands like a German Shepherd with bad hips, with her hind end sagging and swaying as the scuttles around.

It’s dispiriting to see, but she will try to play with her toys sometimes, even when she cannot walk well. Once in a while, she practically sits and tries to walk at the same time because she cannot hold up her back end.

I am NOT asking her to do ANYTHING physical right now. Other than going outside, where we help her potty, Lilly only pokes around the house or hangs out on a bed or in a crate.

She looks skinny, so we’ve upped her food intake, but that led to last night’s poopfest. We got almost NO sleep. We were up with her every 90 minutes or so.

Friday morning, I gave her a full-blown bath and did 2 HUGE loads of laundry because she had soiled nearly every blanket, washable pee pad, and towel we’ve been using.

We go Monday for a recheck and some blood work. So, I might have more meaningful news then.

Lilly says, "I'm not very happy about my bath this morning, but look how shiny and fluffy I am."

For now, this is the tired (but clean) girls of Champion of My Heart … saying have a LOVELY weekend.

Before this relapse, Lilly was much more likely to "tip one hip" while in a DOWN position, but now, she tends to balance more like the Sphinx. I suspect it's more stable for her. She is less likely to tip over backwards. You can see the shaved spot behind her harness, where they did her spinal tap. (Photo from Wednesday evening.)

From Wednesday evening, Lilly enjoying being home and sitting in the evening sun. That, friends, is the face of GRATITUDE.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. My love to Lilly and you. I don’t know if I could have been as strong as you’ve been. I wan to thank you for making me take another look at my dogs’ insurance. I somehow thought they were covered for $10,000, but it was only $2,500 per incident, with routine care included. I don’t really care about the routine care, so I’ve now upped it to include $10,000 for accident/illness. I’ve never really gone on the computer over the weekend., but I’ve been doing it now to see how Lilly is doing. God bless you and Lilly and keep her safe.

  2. I hope you and Lilly get to share many more of those sunny days. She looks so happy there.

  3. We’re thinking of you, hoping that Lilly stays on an improving path toward health. What a very rough time you’ve had. Please give her an extra pat from me.

  4. I sure hope your Lilly gets better soon. I have one of our girls due for a rabies shot this coming week. We have to give it to her or they won’t issue her license. I feel so torn. We’ve never had any problems before, but your story tears at our heart. :{

    1. Thanks, Evelyn ~ If it makes you feel any better, about a month after Lilly got sick, we gave our old / big dog the exact same vaccine that Lilly received, and he was completely fine. He has never had trouble with vaccines in the past, and he was fine again this time. My cautions are more for people with pets who’ve had even seemingly “mild” adverse vaccine reactions … ever.

    1. No. I haven’t called the neuro team about it. We see them again on Monday for a recheck and CBC, so they’ll be able to see for themselves. Lilly’s gums and tongue are still pink, just not Pink-PINK. It’s nothing like when our late yellow lab (Cody) had his spleen tumor rupture. His tongue and gums were seriously WHITE. It was awful.

As a comparison … look at these wall paint colors. Lilly is more like bridal pink vs pink begonia.

      1. How long has it been like that? The paint colors are quite different to me. I would want to talk to somebody about it (the neuro or regular vet or somebody); particularly with the added latest decline. (sorry, don’t want to be overly paranoid here, but if recent, along with the decline, I think one of the vets should know)

  5. I’m wishing so hard for you both that Lilly will make a full recovery to her healthy bouncy self this month!

And as I just did that I had a flash of her turning up her head and licking my face.

Much love and light surrounding Lilly and her loved ones…

    Kristin
