FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

February 22, 2012

Remember that lovely gift package Lilly received from Rocky Mountain Veterinary Neurology after her week-long hospital stay? Well, we think she is channeling her frustration over her brain troubles in new ways.

They tell us that Lilly likely wasn’t in any / much pain, even at the height of the inflammation in her brain and lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningoencephalomyelitis), but I have to wonder if Lilly doesn’t have a headache … after seeing this.

Monkey isn’t the only toy to take a beating last week. Look what Lilly did to her Ferret Bandit toy.

Frustrated much?

I like to think this means Lilly is feeling better. But, I cannot have her ruining all her best toys, so I did give her a rawhide bone to chew (even though she isn’t that far removed from such terrible side-effect tummy troubles). She seemed glad to have something do with her cooped-up energy.

Remember, ONE MONTH ago tomorrow (1/23 – 2/23), Lilly received her rabies vaccine and has been very ill since. So, she hasn’t had much fun in a long time.

We’re working on that and creating opportunities for her to get outside some each day (more than just to potty) and to play a little inside and outside (as weather permits).

Tomorrow is Lilly’s next recheck exam at Rocky Mountain Veterinary Neurology, so we hope to have important news on her recovery after that.

About the Author Roxanne Hawn

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. I had a trash basket full of toys, socks, and books that looked like that when my dog, Gypsy, was a puppy, but she grew out of chewing really fast. Now I actually have to worry about her teeth, as she doesn’t get them clean by chewing! So there is an upside to all the ruined things…

  2. I would think that it is more of a frustration rather than pain. And who could blame her for being frustrated?

Could try a little more exercise? Could try some “guess which hand” sort of games and things …? Perhaps some of the interactive toys?

  3. Looks like the Monkey is an organic cotton dog toy — guess Lilly likes organic.

Betsy and Norman get in to a toy ripping mood every once in a while. Lilly has a right to be in that mood.

  4. Dear Lilly and your family.
I am a friend of K and KB, Romping and Rolling in the Rockies, and I heard how sick you are! I am so sorry.
I know your pawrents are soooo worried.
I am going to send some swirling bubbles your way to help makes you better. They will swirl around you, and I hope you can feel all the love that is packed inside of them- for you!

  6. We also read about you on KB’s blog and came over to say hello. Lilly looks like such a wonderful girl and a real trooper. We are crossing all our paws for her to make a full recovery.

  7. From Romping and Rolling! We have been praying for Lilly to get well since the beginning of this nightmare. She sounds so much improved! Stella has a whole big laundry basket full of stuffed toys and she only looks on in silence and horror when another dog visits and tears some up! She loves her squeaky toys the best and plays music on them often. (I am convinced she thinks its lovely.) Stop at a second hand store and pick up some stuffees for Lilly to play with, and tear up if need be. We can get them for 25 to 50 cents each. If you want to remove the squeakers, thats easy, open a seam, remove and re-sew. There is a rawhide that I like for Stella, its probably 10″x5″. Its rolled up tight like a cigar so the only good chew is on the ends. Make sure they are tight when you buy and they will last a long time.(no big pieces come off)

    Cheers, Jo and Stella

  8. KB told us about you. Oh Lilly – while we’re glad you are on the mend, we are so sorry to hear how cooped up you’ve been. That’s even hard for us goldens to bear, but glad you are feeling okay enough to rip the stuffing out of your toy(s)! Praying for a super vet appointment for you.

  9. Good Morning Lilly. I am so glad to see you feeling well enough to tear up your toys. Even if it is in frustration.

My Vickie doesn’t let me have toys at all cause I tear the up and eat them……(not good on stomachs)

Your still in our prayers all the time. It is so good to see you improving daily.

    Love
    Bert

  10. I am also stopping by from Romping and Rolling in the Rockies to send you my best wishes. We’ll be sending good thoughts your way!

  11. My Annie wrecks all her toys, it doesn’t matter so long as she’s happy.
Poor Lilly, sorry she has been so ill. She does seem to be making progress. I hope she continues to get well.

  12. Maybe try a bully stick instead of the rawhide? I’m too scared of all the horror stories to feed rawhide to Elka anymore (though she does get the occasional cow ear)

    Hugs to Lilly!

  13. I’m glad she’s on the mend. Those toys are kinda common place around here. I can’t keep a plush chew in one piece. I wish they didn’t sell them with squeakers inside because it’s a choking hazard once a dog dismantles the toy. Hugs and kisses to you both!

  14. I am stopping by from Romping and Rolling in the Rockies. I am so sorry Lilly has been so ill – hope she is on the road to recovery and her re-check goes well.

  15. Hello, we are stopping by from Romping and Rolling blog. We have just gone back and read the stories about your sweet Lilly’s medical issues. How scary and I would have never thought something like that could happen from a rabies shot. We are sending drool for Lilly to continue her improvements to a healthy Lilly. Sniffs, The HoundDogs
