“Dear Dog” Filmmaker Needs to Raise $3,000

Columbia University filmmaker Jed Cowley needs to raise $3,000 by September 6,  for post-production costs on his romantic comedy short film “Dear Dog, I Love You.” The movie features canine actor Paul Newman, a white basset hound rescued by Suzanne Fitch with Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue. He had been tied up in an abandoned garage.

Yes, he has blue eyes and everything.

Trainer / handler Karen Wells works with Paul on a variety of cues, including all the usual stuff and a few unique ones:

• Playing piano
• Playing patty-cake
• Wiping his feet on a mat
• Walking over and just staring at someone

Paul also shares a portion of his earnings with bassets in rescue and now has an entire team of guardians.

Jed tell us that this awkward love story is about Dudley, a bored and communication-inhibited man in his mid-30s. One day, in the attempt to end his own life, he thinks he hears his white basset hound, Maximo, tell him he shouldn’t go through with it.

Stunned and rejuvenated with a new and exciting purpose in life, Dudley tries to get his dog to talk again. But, he must go to uncomfortable lengths to accomplish this, namely, talking to a girl.

Jed and his team have already filmed the movie, but they need money to finish the all-important post-production work. When he first contacted me, I thought, “Oh, boy. I bet he needs a LOT of money,” but his page on KickStarter shows a goal of at least $3,000 … which seems infinitely doable. Of course, they could certainly use more, if you are so inclined.

Jed and friends could also use help from some enthusiastic contributors, including:

• Composers
• Other very important post-production expenses and materials
