FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

June 30, 2011

I’ve always made-do with a shovel + bag or bucket for routine poople scoopling around the property. Then, I saw this claw scooper at Petco and thought, “Why not?”

best dog blog champion of my heart petco claw scooperI’m happy to report it works really well:

  • It’s light enough to use with one hand (just squeeze the handles together and the claw opens).
  • It opens wide enough to grab a full load, if you get my drift.
  • It dumps out easily, keeping the yuck factor at a minimum.

And, while we don’t have any around here, I suspect the toy-truck-like element of it’s scooping action might just entice kids to get the job done … pretty darn fast.

Rather than allow free-range pooping, we’ve been encouraging the dogs ONLY to go in the dog pen as much as possible, which is much easier to keep track and scoop as needed … versus … walking 3 entire acres looking for deposits (which is a big, fat, hot, stinking drag).

So, do tell, pals … how to you handle the dirty deed at your house? Any tricks you’d like to share?

I bought this dog product with my very own dollars. I’m writing about it simply because it’s a handy little tool to have around, if you have dogs who poop … which I’m assuming is all of you.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. You know…I bought something similar to this last summer but only used it for a few weeks….I just have an easier time with my old rake and pan…I guess it is just what you are used to…I only have one small maltipoo so the cleanup isn’t too yucky:)

All in all the claw was functional but there was just something about it that made me miss my rake:)

  2. I have a very small yard and neighbors that demand there be no smell so I need to pick up quickly. I just get a plastic baggie and put the mess from my two dogs in a plastic shopping bag and throw it in the garbage pail. I have one of the claw things but I don’t like to clean it. I have an anxiety disorder so the less I can do the better. Nice to know what other people do.

  3. I have the old fashioned, trusty (while somewhat gross) pan and rake outfit with LONG handles. My guys are free to use the gravel run for their outdoor assignments via doggie door. We are in the back yard for fun times hopefully not poopy times. Mostly works for us. We have a bucket lined with a plastic bag (changed weekly) and lid for saving our treasures until garbage day. Isn’t this more than you ever hoped to know about me?

  4. You’re my pooper scooper hero. Caring whether there was any poop on those 3 acres? It wouldn’t happen around here. I didn’t even do this when we had less than half acre in the city. 🙂 Now that we have 10, well, nope. It turns into fertilizer faster than you might think. 🙂

  5. While I just have a small city yard, the dogs like to play “find it” to catch all the stray poops! They’re very good at sniffing out stray little nuggets that I miss with my eye!

  6. I have a similar product and also love it. I have 2 English mastiffs, so our poop piles are more than a handful. We also have a lot of viny St. Augustine grass in the yard, which made picking up the poop with a rake-like tool quite frustrating. With the claw, I can push the grasses down out of the way and get under the pile. It’s great!
