FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

February 8, 2011

Now that you’ve seen all the videos, read my accounts of other herding lesson events, and considered my ideas on possible causes of Lilly’s relatively poor performance in her first official herding lesson, I’d like you to vote in this poll.

About the Author Roxanne Hawn

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. It looks to me like she’s just trying to work through what’s expected of her. Herding is complicated – there is a lot for her to process. Even if it turns out she’s not a “natural” (and I’m not saying that she isn’t) it doesn’t mean that this can’t be an enjoyable experience for her and you. Enjoy the journey.

  2. I think Lily reacted naturally and just needs to learn with experience. She certainly seems cut out for it in that she clearly enjoys herself and takes charge!

  3. Why not ask the experts over here: http://www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?s=5fa50617e3b29efcb901d36493ab727f&showforum=6

I’m loathe to offer an opinion because I don’t feel qualified. I know enough about herding to know that I know hardly anything about herding. I trust Cathy’s opinion though but of course she is only one opinion. I’d be curious to see what the BC people on that internet group had to say. They’re not always very polite but they know a lot more about herding than your typical reader here.

If you do decide to carry on with lessons I might be interested in splitting a lesson with Cathy with you if you like. A solid hour is too long for Strummer and it might be the case that it’s too long for Lilly too.

    1. Thanks to @Aly and @Elyane for the lesson sharing idea. I’ll let you know. I think I might try one more full hour first, as weather allows. I got a really interesting note with some detailed observations from Dog-Geek via email. I’ll have to slow the video WAY down to show what she saw … and what might have caused Lilly to sniff around. I’ll try to get that video ready for next week.
