FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

September 17, 2010

So, I got an offer to do a video/blog interview with a veterinarian who is serving as a spokesperson for Hartz’s new dental treats (called Crunch ‘n Clean).

Think of it like those celebrity media tours you see, where the same celeb talks to 30 or more morning TV news anchors all in one day via satellite … except this one went via social media and blogs.

Dental News Ho-Hum

Since I’m sure all of you already know all the remedial information about why dental care is important for your dogs, I asked if I could instead ask more advanced questions (via email, to be answered via video) relating to dog behavior and to Ginko’s recent water mongering.

(P.S. I wrote about the water thing and the food change on my Dog Food Dish Blog for K9Cuisine.com, and it seems other people are having similar troubles with other salmon-based foods. See the comments.)

Wait! Was That an Answer?

Let’s just say the results of the interview are mixed because I’m not sure the answers we got back are all that helpful.

Trust me. I interview hundreds of people every year, and this happens a lot, even in face-to-face interviews, but in my usual work, I can either keep asking until I get a viable answer, or I can just ask someone else. So, this video is kind of funny to me because:

  • The first question gave Dr. Cohen a chance to get Hartz’s key message across. Check!
  • The second question isn’t the one I sent. Hmmm?
  • The answer to the third question doesn’t say anything that I didn’t already say in the question itself, so it’s not really an answer at all. At least not a helpful one.

If for some reason you cannot see the video interview below, click through here. Maybe I’m just a cranky old journalism girl. See what you think.

Dog Product Giveaway

They sent me a box of Hartz Crunch n’ Clean to give away.  The first few ingredients are:

  • Wheat flour
  • Ground Whole wheat
  • Chicken meal
  • Wheat germ meal

I’ve doubled checked, and these treats are NOT the ones currently under voluntary recall.

So, I’ll take entries via comments to this post through midnight Sunday, Sept 19, 2010, then do a random drawing for a winner.

Mini Review

We have not tried these treats, but I can tell you that Lilly:

  • Thinks the box smells awesome
  • Stashed away and guarded the FedEx bubble envelope in which it came
  • Tried to suck on and/or nibble on the corner of the box while I wrote this post

So, that’s probably a good sign they are tasty.

*** FTC Disclosure ***

I was not paid in any way to post this. I thought the video interview would be an interesting experiment, and I thought giving away a box of treats would be nice.

  1. Had to laugh about the interview. I must say that I had to learn how to avoid questions and not give answers when I was giving interviews for my books -sometimes you have no idea how to answer so you have to not answer the question while giving some kind of answer. Although I don’t think that’s what happened here. Lily makes me laugh.

  2. Hi Roxie,
    Interesting post.
I wonder if some dogs or breeds tend to have more dental issues than others. Kelly is 9, and I don’t brush her teeth very often, but the vet always says her teeth and gums are perfect.
