FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

June 9, 2009

Remember me mentioning that I got to interview Temple Grandin, Nicholas Dodman, and Jean Donaldson for a magazine article a while back? Well, the story is through editing and is set to run in July. (I promise, I’ll be able to tell you soon what it’s about.) The editors had one photo of me and Lilly, but they wanted one of me with both dogs in a more spring-like setting for the magazine contributors’ page. The old photo was taken in winter. So, one day last week, I actually did my hair and put on full makeup and begged Tom to shoot some photos. Not my favorite thing on a good day.

Lesson? It’s a real blow to the self-esteem to take photos first thing in the morning. Seriously, who is that wrinkly, double-chinned girl?

Here is the photo I most often use from a couple winters ago, when my hair was shorter (and I suddenly realize, when I looked younger and thinner … or maybe the coat hides a lot).

Getting all three of us — me, Ginko, and Lilly — to look good at the same time, when the photographer is an impatient husband, is a losing proposition. (Audrey … if you’re reading, I wish I’d had you shoot some while you were here.)

But, he did finally capture Lilly nibbling on my head, which is something she loves to do. I’ve convinced myself it’s a sign of extreme affection. Here, it’s more likely nerves.

I ended up sending these next two photos to the editor, but I’m not a big fan of either one. First, because it makes me wonder if I look like this a lot? Clearly the purple sweater is better standing up than sitting down.

Second, because Lilly looks worried. Tom says she looks alert, but I think you’ll agree with me. She didn’t think it was much fun. Look at those eyebrows.

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. You’re sweet. We miss seeing you guys. We’ll have to find time to visit a trial soon, just to see our old agility pals.

  2. I love these pictures…you look great in all of them but I love the last one the best…everyone looks so cute! Tom did a great job!

Whenever I need a picture of me and one of the critters I just set up the “custom self-timer” to take about 10 shots in a row and I can act as silly or serious or ridiculous as I want and I can quickly press delete if there’s one that *no one* should ever see 😉

Can’t wait to find out about the article!

  3. I love the last one. I also like the second to last one, but I agree, Lilly looks concerned about something.

My husband would have *never* had the patience for this process. Good job, Tom!

  4. Gotta love photo shoots with/of your animals. I know getting Marge and my cat to sit together nicely in one frame is impossible.

I think you and your husband did a great job 🙂 Lilly does look a little worried in one of them, but I think the last one is perfect (or as close to perfect as one can get with two dogs!)

  5. Oh, Roxanne, I think the pictures are adorable! I do agree that Lilly looks worried in that one picture..her eyebrows are a dead giveaway…haha. Ginko looks serene; and, you are lovely! Glad you needed the pictures for the magazine folks so we would get to enjoy them, too!
