In about a month, Ginko will be 12. He recently had a thorough exam, senior blood work, and vaccinations (3-year rabies, 1-year lepto). And, this week … he went in to have his teeth “done.” While he was conked out, they went ahead and took off two bothersome lumps — one on an eyelid and one his head.
Ginko did great, but he still isn’t feeling entirely like himself … yet.

To balance the posts lately about Lilly being less than great to Ginko, here is a dog video showing how much the dogs really do love each other. Our holiday message for 2011? Nibble on the ones you love. Ho ho ho!

Until the winds reached gale force, I worked outside Saturday on the blog and other things so that I will have more time this week for paying clients and money-making deadlines. It took a few tries to get the photo I was shooting for … as you will see. Offer up your best captions, if you’re in the mood.

One of our Twitter friends (@IntuitiveBridge) recently lost some followers for essentially saying that we shouldn’t make our dogs emotionally responsible for us. The backlash stemmed from this post about separation anxiety, where Bridget said …
“Okay, I bring this up because there are people in the world who treat their dogs like their soul mates, like their bestest friends, like the loves of their lives, like their therapists. There are dogs who can handle this and dogs who can’t. If your dog exhibits signs of separation anxiety, you need to lighten their emotional load. This does not mean putting on a fake happy face. Dogs are not stupid. This means getting the emotional help and connection somewhere away from your pet.”

Upon our return Saturday from a day-trip into the mountains south and west of here, I discovered an amusing sight. It seems Ginko transferred his food-stealing habit from peaches to bananas. Based on the evidence found, including 2-3 leftover stems, we either interrupted his fruit feast. OR, he was saving the rest for later. What do you think?

At first, we blamed Ginko’s early-morning wake-up calls on knee pain. Then, we had that whole excessive thirst and urination thing going on. Now, we’re not sure if he’s just hungry on the new turkey/sweet potato food or merely a pain in the neck. So, we’ve been experimenting with some things, and for now … it seems to be working.

When we talked about bloat recently, I shared my long-standing habit of putting water on the dogs’ kibble before I fed it. I didn’t let it soak or anything, but I would add water and serve. And, it turns out research shows that increases a big dog’s risk of bloat by 320% (when the food contains citric acid, which man dogs food do).

You’ve surely heard the tale of James and the Giant Peach. Well, today let me tell the the story of Ginko and the Giant Pile of Peach Pits.
It began innocently enough with the discovery of random peach pits throughout the house, over several days.

We had a VERY important blog post scheduled for today, but there are a couple glitches in our lives that caused a delay. One is work-related. One is yet-another potential scare with Ginko’s health. We got some additional news on Tom’s health this week as well, so we could use some good mojo … if you have any today.

As you may recall, during Ginko’s recent knee surgery, the surgeon found icky fistulas (or channels through soft tissue, where infection had burrowed in). He decided to culture a couple of those spots, just in case the infection required some super-duper kind of antibiotic. Essentially, they swabbed a couple areas and grew them in petri dishes to see what sprouted.

Once again, we come to the end of the week, with all of us just tired to the bone. Especially, sweetie-boy Ginko … who has been recovering from his knee surgery Monday. We’ll let the photos tell the tale.

After a nervous morning, waiting for the phone to ring, I heard from the orthopedic surgeon around noon. Ginko did fine, with strong vitals throughout his 2 hours or so under anesthesia. The surgeon waited to call until Ginko was awake from the sedation, but he reported that Ginko was “drunk as a monkey” on pain meds and the like. So, I’m glad to hear he is resting comfortably. Woozy, maybe, but comfortably.

Today, Ginko goes under for his third knee surgery in his 10 years. Surgeons sawed apart and screwed each knee back together (a procedure called TPLO) at age 3. Due to increasing problems with his right knee, they’ll take that hardware out in hopes of solving his pain issues. Last week, even with two different pain meds, he cried and cried and cried.
