To balance the posts lately about Lilly being less than great to Ginko, here is a dog video showing how much the dogs really do love each other. Our holiday message for 2011? Nibble on the ones you love. Ho ho ho!

It’s December 22! We made it. That days now get LONGER again. In celebration of Yule, two videos from years past of Lilly showing happiness knows no single season. Read the rest of this entry »
My silly schedule in 2011 precluded Lilly going to dog training classes with our dog trainer in Boulder, Gigi Moss. Since I took last week “off” for Thanksgiving, we finally had time to attend a level-2, drop-in class. Alas, it was at a busy outdoor mall the day before Thanksgiving. Lilly had a little trouble. These photos tell the story of her comfort and her worry.

It took four years and innumerable tries before we FINALLY got a new avatar photo of me and Lilly. I cannot tell you how many attempts to replace our favorite photo from December 2007 resulted in me sobbing. I’m not the most photogenic person, and I take bad photos personally. Here, then, is our new favorite picture … along with a few outtakes … because I really did NOT want to be that girl who uses a terribly outdated photo online.

The day after Thanksgiving, when many still have pots and pans soaking, is a good time to share this video of Lilly putting away her dog toys. You’ll notice that she holds them down with her foot. That’s because she often puts her toys away with such enthusiasm that they fly out of the basket. No reward for that, so Lilly learned to make sure they stay put. Therefore, the foot bonus action became part of the dog trick.

Happy Thanksgiving. To celebrate this festive occasion, we have two videos to share. The first shows Lilly howling on cue. The second shows Lilly “laughing.” This noise has been isolated by researchers and deemed dog laughter.

In today’s backstory video, Lilly — our intrepid dog — learns to SIT-STAY atop a small sled while being pulled along in the snow of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Clearly, she finds it very, very funny. Read the rest of this entry »
As a special Thanksgiving week event, we’ll be posting a few of our favorite videos of Lilly, our canine heroine, each day. Whether you’re seeing them for the first time (welcome, new readers) or get the chance to enjoy these reruns, we send our best holiday wishes. Today, Lilly on her home agility course.

Tom took this picture the other night. Lilly likes to sleep on her back in the evenings. Sometimes, she brings one of her plush toys along. Here you’ll see just how much she loves her KONG Braidz Monkey that the fellas gave me when I toured the KONG factory in Golden, Colorado, earlier this year. It’s beyond cute.

It started out as a necessity. Swamped with deadlines and a work trip on the docket, I didn’t realize Lilly was getting low on her medicine. To stretch it a bit longer, I skipped her evening dose of clomipramine (antidepressant that targets her generalized fears) for a few days. I kept it up, however, even after her prescription refill arrived.

Sometimes I capture images of Lilly that reveal a sliver of her soul. She is the most earnest, sincere, and focused dog I’ve ever known. Observe. (I posted 3 of these photos to our Champion of My Heart Facebook fan page last week, but the others are debuting here.) Which one is your favorite?

I hate autumn. It’s my least favorite time of year, often steeped in angst and frustration. This year, however, autumn has been glorious, and if a girl like me says that, then you know it has been amazing. A couple weeks ago, I did an impromptu photo shoot of Lilly amid our fall foliage.

A couple Sundays ago, I took Lilly with me to visit my mom, who remains in the rehabilitation section, after the heart scare in August. Lilly did struggle with a few things, but one nice comment from my mom’s roommate made it all worthwhile. (Sorry, I forgot my camera, so no pictures.)

I’ll write more when I know more, but the preliminary news from one of the veterinary technicians is that the pathology report clearly says, “BENIGN.” She went on to say that the name of the tumor wasn’t something she’d heard of, so I’ll have to wait to talk to our veterinarian about the details.
BUT … the headline we’re shouting from the mountain top is …
It’s benign!
And, now … we rest and release all the worry and tension and focus on helping Lilly recover from surgery.

"That silly mommy worries a lot. I knew all along I was fine."
The girls of Champion of My Heart first “met” Ecco D’Oro, a passionate Spinone Italiano (Italian pointer) with a penchant for stealing underwear and snorkeling in the koi pond, when we reviewed Ecco’s human grandma’s book about a Native American artist named Quincy Tahoma.

"It's exhausting being this handsome."
The truth? We were a little sad that we were not the first dog-based book reviewers on the scene.
Since then, however, we’ve made friends via the blog, via email, and on Facebook with Ecco and his many, many dog friends … who collectively put the “Power of the Paw” into action every day through both virtual and real community efforts.
