Thanks to everyone who took our dog blog poll last week about dogs being left alone in cars (temperatures aside). Thanks so much to all those who posted comments and explained their strategies and opinions on the matter. Here are the results.
I encourage everyone to learn what they can about this issue of dogs in cars and continue to do what they feel is best and safe for their dogs and their circumstances.
The only additional points I’ll make are these:
- Ambient temperatures matter
- Exposure to sunlight matters
- Humidity matters
One of readers offered these important details about temperatures some might consider “mild” (like 70 degrees) still being quite dangerous, including this statement: “But the researchers found that such measures are inadequate: a cracked window had an insignificant effect on both the rate of heating and the final temperature after an hour, and the air conditioner trick only delayed the temperature spike by about five minutes.”

Voting for 2011 Best Dog Blog ends July 29 (this Friday).
Remember you can vote each day (1-2 times).
Please VOTE Champion of My Heart as Best Dog Blog!
Should we be honored with the award, we’ll give the $1,000 donation that’s part of the prize package to our friends at Humane Society of Boulder Valley. That’s where we adopted Lilly in 2004.
Those who voted are not nearly as obsessive as I am.
It was an interesting mix of answers.
I was really surprised to find so much variation in answers.
One of the things that’s helped me know what temps are like in the car is to stay in it with Honey while my husband runs errands. I can feel first hand how even a cool day can get hot quickly besides seeing Honey’s response to the temperature.
Even better, I’m there to get outside the car and under a tree with her if we mis-guessed and brought her with us on a day that was hotter than we expected.
Good to know – thanks for sharing!
