FREE e-book "8 Things to Know About Veterinary Care"

December 2, 2010

A lot of people frown upon blogs. Tell them you blog about your dog and just watch the eyes roll. They assume you hold a one-way ticket to Crazy Dog Lady Town (sorry, fellas). If that’s true, why not embrace it? Here are the Top 5 Signs You’re a Dog Blog Superfan!

1. You DREAM about other people’s dogs.

A while back, one of my dreams included Qannik from The Thundering Herd loping out of some trees. When I told D.K. on Facebook about the dream, I learned that Qannick doesn’t really lope. I still think it counts. I’ve also dreamed about Buster from GoPetFriendly.com, but I’ve at least met Buster in person.

2. You WORRY a lot about the health and happiness of other Dog Blog stars.

I cannot tell you how sick with worry I’ve been over K’s (from Romping and Rolling in the Rockies) from toe amputation (and its causes). Again, I actually know K in real life, but I would worry just as much if Marge or Kona got sick.

3. You call in favors and connections in hopes of getting dogs the medicines they need.

If you don’t have a diabetic dog, you may not have heard that there is trouble with the supply of one certain kind of insulin. There is a rather complicated way certain people can still get that particular insulin for their dogs, but it takes some doing.

When I learned that Frankie, from Will My Dog Hate Me, needed help, I contacted one of my clients (a veterinary drug and supply company) to see how Edie could get access to the meds Frankie needs.

In this case, I have met Edie in person, but not Frankie.

4. You wear Dog Blog schwag to big public events in hopes of raising brand awareness and readership for your friends.

Not kidding. Just one example … There is a HUGE bicycle event here in Colorado. Outdoorsy people here tend to be dog people too, so I wore my GoPetFriendly.com t-shirt to the event.

5. You read Dog Blogs rather than watch TV (at least some of the time).

I admit it. I often end up reading your Dog Blogs after dinner, rather than watching TV. Part of it is because TV is seriously bad these days, but part of it is also that so many of you are so doggone awesome.

Want to add to the list? What is your top sign that you’ve become a Dog Blog Superfan?

About the Author Roxanne Hawn

Trained as a traditional journalist and based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, I'm a full-time freelance writer for magazines, websites, and private clients. My areas of specialty include everything in the lifestyles arena, including health and home, personal finance and other consumer interests, relationships and trends, people and business profiles ... and, of course, all things pet related.

I don't just love dogs. I need them in my life. Seriously.

  1. So funny at work how many people roll their eyes about dog blogging, but I also have co-workers come up to me about stories I have posted. So call me crazy, but they read it.

P.S. – And Q still loves that he was in your dreams!

  2. I love and adore dogs and dog blogs. Since our little dog passed away, this is one way I can keep our memories of him alive – by reading about other dogs and about dog causes!

  3. I love hearing about your efforts with Lilly, esp. since my own shelter dog has some serious baggage. My kids keep begging me to get another dog, but our little dog seems to like being an only doggie child.

  4. Definitely prefer blogs to TV! But maybe that’s bc I am allergic to TV and to dogs? Hate TV, love dogs, especially love reading about them since we don’t have one of our own…

  5. I just had this conversation (again) with a friend about how incredibly, awesomely perfect dogs are. I mean, what’s not to like? Some dog blogs, I must say, are better than others. I love yours and, because we have a greyhound, am also partial to anything with a needlenose on it!

  6. Guilty on all counts!! LOL – Crazy Dog Lady Town, here I come. 🙂

I’m with Maggie – Rod and I have giggled over the Ginko/Lilly shenanigans, took bets on how long Cooper would be a foster, and fawn over Chloe’s travels. I connect with the writers of these blogs several times a week – just by reading their posts. That’s far more often than I touch base with most members of my family!

By the way – I think Buster dreams of you too.

  7. Loved this! My dogs love blogs when they entail toys and food, as Champion does frequently! Great post, Roxanne. I may have to link to this in one of my blog assignments (#reverb10) this month!

  8. Too funny! Everyone’s comments have made me laugh. I’m with Maggie, though I usually say something like, “Oh, my friend and her dog. . .” and am guilty of avoiding saying it’s a “blog friend” to avoid the crazy dog lady status.

ps-I hope you’re feeling better after your week “off” germs.

  9. Oooh, I love this post! I am the same way: I choose to read dog blogs over watching TV. The real sign that I am a superfan, though? I report dog-blog happenings to my husband as if they were dogs or people we know in person, like, “Guess what happened to Mayzie?” or “I have to show you the cutest picture of Ty!” 🙂

  10. Crazy Dog Lady Town LOL!!!!!!
You’re there when the only sound your co-workers hear from your computer is barking from all the training/trial videos.

  11. Well, we’re superfans of your blog, too (especially those fab posts about Lilly and her training endeavors!). And I’m with you – reading blogs beats watching TV any day. Now, if I just had the time to actually do so… I’m bogged down in end-of-semester work here…

Too funny about your Qannik dream. Now that’s obsession!!!

  12. Dogs always bring a smile to my face, even if I don’t know them. How could they not? I think dog-lovers are a very special bunch who like to band together and offer one another support.

  13. Roxanne, Frankie and I so appreciate your help! Someday I’ll write about the long, insane road to Vetsulin story… But it was wonderful to have your support. And yes, count me in the ranks of Crazy Dog Blogger Lady.
