Patty Carey-Johnstone, who is a lover of flat coated retrievers, lost her family’s home and six dog to fire May 25, 2010. Friends across the dog world have rallied to accomplish these goals:
- Find them a new place to live … pronto.
- Raise money to help them through this difficult time.
- Get the attention of producers at ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition so that they can get a great new home.
If you’d like to help, here’s how:
Online Donations
Friends are using the PayPal account for the Flat-Coated Retriever Emergency Health Fund, which I’ve read is overseen by Nanci Hanover, from the Great Western Flat-Coated Retriever Club. So, you can make donations online, if you’d like. Here is a link to the PayPay donation page.
Mailed/Shipped/Delivered Donations
Another friend of Patty’s named Roger Demares offered his place of business as a mailing address/location to accept donations:
- Johnstone Family
- c/o Monroe Equipment Maintenance Inc
- 290 N. Church St (Rte. 94)
- Sparta, NJ 07871
The Colesville (NJ) Fire Department is also taking donations:
- Johnstone Family
- c/o Colesville Fire Department
- 1202 State Rt 23
- Sussex, NJ 07461-3735
Work Your Connections
And, if you happen to know anyone who knows anyone who works for ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, please let friends who set up this Facebook page know so that they can begin lobbying for help.

I learned about this loss in our broader dog community through Gina Spadafori on Facebook and the Pet Connection blog. Here is a link to her post on this tragedy.
