Herons Visit the Pond

Our neighbor Tim is home from college. He used a spotting scope and his camera to take these great photos of a couple of night herons who visited the trees near our pond last week. Yes, that's snow on the ground behind them. Yes, there are not yet leaves on the trees.

Last summer, we had some blue herons visit the pond and eat some of our goldfish. Sadly, those fish (who were nearly 3 years old) died over the winter when the pond froze nearly to the bottom (it's not very deep). We're looking into putting a few stocked trout in there this year as a test, but that might attract the wrong kind of wildlife, so we'll see.
