Lilly is both the noisiest dog I’ve ever had and the most silent. Lately, it seems, every time I turn around … there she is under foot. I bet I’ve stepped on her more in the last month than I have in the last 3 years. And, I’m not sure why.
Maybe she’s just my best, best friend from all the training work. Maybe she’s hoping each move I make is headed toward playing outside. (We’re going out less due to cold and snow.) Maybe she’s just clingy.
Or, maybe I’m just so distracted that I don’t hear her coming. She is, after all, the only dog I’ve ever had that I successfully trained to tolerate weekly toenail trims, so her toes make little to no sound on the tile floors.
I’m all for togetherness and the bonding we get from training A LOT, but I feel terrible that I keep stepping on her. Her toes must be quite sore.
She’s ALWAYS followed me in the house, but never this close.
An example — I’m brushing my teeth, take a step over to the trash can, and in the split second I return, BAM Lilly is laying down on the bath mat waiting for me to finish.
Or, I’m walking down the hall and turn quickly suddenly remembering something. BAM, I step on Lilly and trip. Both of us grumbling from the crash.
Perhaps in her spare time, Lilly is training to be a ninja.
That must be it. And, if so … that means I’m the one having trouble all of a sudden. If she’s always been right THERE, and I’m stepping on her NOW, then I’m the one with slow reflexes. Shoot!

My aussie does that too. Maybe it’s a herding breed thing. I always trip on Bosco in the kitchen, he lays down silently behind me while I’m cooking or doing dishes and I take a step back and boom. Poor Bosco! Good thing he’s a big boy!
Maybe it’s a Border Collie thing. I step on Jaime all the time but it doesn’t seem to discourage him from lying down directly behind me in the kitchen when I’m cooking
devon, on the other hand, rarely gets stepped on but that’s probably because it hrts him a lot more when I do.
